A nurturing beginning for a lifelong love of learning

Tamar Valley Steiner School offers Kinder and Prep from separate classrooms in our purpose-built early childhood building at our beautiful St Leonards campus.

For information on when your child can start kinder or determining whether they are Kinder or Prep age in Tasmania, please see the information below from the Tasmanian govenrment.

At Tamar Valley Steiner School, our Kindergarten and Prep program provides a warm, home-like environment where children can grow through play, creativity, and connection with nature. Grounded in the Steiner educational philosophy, our approach supports full development of each child — body, heart, and mind — during the important early years of development.

Foundations for learning laid carefully through play, rhythm, learning and nature, warmth and connection

The kinder-prep program supports healthy development by:

  • Striving to create an atmosphere of loving warmth and guidance that promotes joy, wonder and reverence.
  • Providing a healthy rhythm to each day, season, and year along with the celebration of festivals and events supporting a sense of wholeness and community.
  • Providing loving interest and acceptance of each child.
  • Opportunities for self-initiated play with simple natural play materials.
  • Awareness that children learn through imitation, through the experience of diverse sensory impressions and through movement. Provided in the environment are structure, protection, and boundaries as well as the potential to take risks and be challenged.
  • Providing real experiences rather than virtual ones; supporting a healthy relationship to and an understanding of the world.
  • Providing artistic activities including storytelling, music, drawing, painting, modelling and rhythmic games each day.
  • Supporting each child’s development through a focus on the processes in life through meaningful work in the classroom, garden and at Bush School.

“If a child has been able to play, to give up their whole living being to the world around, they will be able, in these serious tasks of later life, to devote themselves with confidence and purpose to the service of the world.”

- Rudolf Steiner

Structure of the Kinder program

Our Kinders attend school for two and a half days each week. There are 2 groups of Kinders attending school in each half of the week with all kinders joining on Wednesday for Bush school which is a half day. Adventure Patch (our on-site OSHC provider) do provide a Wednesday afternoon program (more information here), and Kinders bus back to school after bush school.

Kinder Group 2:

Thursday, Friday (9am to 3pm).

Both Kinder groups are co-located in the same room with the pre-school program, (see our pre-school information)

Structure of the Prep program

Our Preps attend school five days a week: Monday to Friday (9am to 3pm).

Wednesday is Bush School day and parents drop off their child to the Trevallyn Nature Reserve between 8.30am-9am. The children are then bussed to St Leonards for the normal finish time of 3pm and collection at school.
